Anzac Day | 25th April
Is probably Australia’s most important national occasion. It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. The soldiers in those forces quickly became known as ANZACs, and the pride they took in that name endures to this day.

RIMAU Commemoration | Sunday closest to 7th July
RIMAU Commemoration – Service held on 1st Sunday in July at the KRAIT Memorial in Dayman Park at Urangan. In remembrance for 23 operatives who were killed uring, and after, an aborted raid on Japanese shipping in Singapore Harbour in 1944.

Korean War Veterans’ Day | 27th July
In the aftermath of the Second World War (1939-1945), communities were still coming to terms with the devastation which that conflict had caused, and the millions it had killed. Yet only five years after the end of this war, another was to break out, and again Australia would commit its forces. It was the Korean War.

Vietnam Veterans’ Day | 18th August
Vietnam Veterans Day is commemorated on 18 August every year. The day was originally known as Long Tan Day, chosen to commemorate the men of D Company, 6RAR who fought in the battle of Long Tan in 1966. On that day, 108 Australian and New Zealand soldiers fought a pitched battle against over 2,000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops in a rubber plantation not far from the small village of Long Tan. The Australians prevailed, but only after fighting in torrential rain for four hours.

Peacekeepers Day | 14th September
Australia’s contribution to peacekeeping exemplifies Australian openness, fairness, egalitarianism, mateship, initiative, and respect for diversity and social justice for all people.

Remembrance Day | 11th November
Remembrance Day (11 November) marks the anniversary of the armistice which ended the First World War (1914–18). Each year Australians observe one minute silence at 11 am on 11 November, in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts.

VP Day | 15th August
VP (Victory in the Pacific) Day, also referred to as VJ (Victory over Japan) Day, is celebrated on 15 August. This date commemorates Japan’s acceptance of the Allied demand for unconditional surrender 14 August 1945. For Australians, it meant that the Second World War was finally over.

National Police Remembrance Day | 27th September
National Police Remembrance Day marks the day the Queensland Police Service, joins other Australian police jurisdictions to stop and honour fallen officer. The Queensland Police Service has 140 officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Arguably one of the most important days on the policing calendar, National Police Remembrance Day is a time for members of the Service and the community to remember, honour and say ‘thank you’ to the dedicated men and women who have died whilst on duty. National Police Remembrance Day has been held in Brisbane and in many regional centres throughout Queensland since 1989. It has now become a tradition for uniformed and plain clothes police officers, together with the Queensland Police Pipes & Drums, the Mounted Unit, Dog Squad and staff members to march through the streets of Brisbane to the church where the Remembrance Day Service is held. Police in many regional centres also hold similar services or marches through cities and country towns. Police Remembrance Day is observed on September 29 as it marks the Feast of the Archangel, St Michael, who was always fighting evil.
